There was some belief that the Blazers would roll with interim head coach Bryant Vincent in the full-time role instead, the Blazers made an out-of-left-field hire by bringing in former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer.ĭilfer has never coached at the collegiate level before and comes to Birmingham after serving as the head coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville. It was a little over a year ago when revered UAB head coach Bill Clark resigned from his position due to health concerns. Nichols’ injury means South Carolina will likely be forced to fill at least one of its tackle roles with a guard and to call on multiple underclassmen to play significant snaps. To make matters worse, left tackle Jaylen Nichols suffered a knee injury during the Gamecocks’ spring game, and all indications are he won’t be available by the time South Carolina travels to Athens for both teams’ SEC opener. South Carolina faces legitimate questions on its offensive line after losing its top three lineman by snap count from a year ago. The momentum continued when quarterback Spencer Rattler announced he was going back along with leading receiver Antwane Wells, but things aren’t all hunky dory on offense. ![]() The Gamecocks ended last season on a high note by knocking Tennessee out of the playoff picture then upsetting rival Clemson before coming up just short in a Gator Bowl shootout with Notre Dame. UT-Martin lost several key defenders from last year, including leading tackler Rob Hicks (113 tackles). By year’s end, UT-Martin had given up 28 points or more in seven games last season. The Skyhawks gave up 30.1 points per game last season, and although having to face teams like Tennessee (which scored 65 points) and Boise State (which scored 30 points) warped those numbers a bit, the defensive side was on the whole the weakest part of this team. The question about this year’s UT-Martin squad is on defense. ![]() The Skyhawks have two former FBS quarterbacks vying to replace him in Matt Myers (Buffalo) and Cornelius Brown IV (Georgia State) and seem in good shape to pick up where last year’s team left off. Offense was not a problem for the Skyhawks in 2022, and the offense should still be in good shape even after losing starting quarterback Dresser Winn.
